Talk about a match made in heaven. |
We spend so much looking for our soul mate, assuming it has to be in the form of romantic love - but what if that's not true? What if Sex and the City is right (it wouldn't be the first time) and our romantic relationships are not our soul mates? Maybe it really is our friends.
Soul mates are not permanent, and are not a one-shot deal. So, we have more than one. Now, when people look for love, they're usually looking for a forever love, a lasting love. Not so with friends - there's always room for more friendship. So, where better to find our soul mates?
Soul mates are about work; they make us face who we really are - and who we are meant to become. That could be your love; but for me, that has always been my friends, and family. Those are the people who are there to pick me up when I fall, when love has let me down. They're the people who make me face what I need to change, and help me find my path. That's a soul mate. Someone who makes me face my...stuff.
As far as soul mates being a match made in heaven...

Have you met your soul mate?
Great post, Sue. I agree, though it can be tricky when you meet a soulmate who happens to be the right gender but the love is not romantic. Probably the number one reason why it's so hard for men and women to be strictly friends. We want to capitalize on those warm feelings of being understood and appreciated. I am lucky to have found many great friends in my life who are there for me when I need them. As for the men I've had relationships, they've all contributed to my soul in one way or another. :)
ReplyDeleteStine - Thanks! I used to think soul mate had to be that one person... Then I found out that we don't only get that one person. That was when it occurred to me that maybe soul mates really are our friends. Everyone (exes included) is probably a "mate" at some point, but for me, I think the deepest connections are with my best friends.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about the idea that soul mates aren't permanent. I think they can come and go, but I think they're the same people. I also believe that your soul mates are the people who get you on a different level, who challenge you to be your best you and who help make your world its best place.
ReplyDeleteI see what you mean; once a soul mate, always a soul mate, even if maybe you're not in constant contact anymore. I like that!
